Meet The Team
Roland Sharman - Founder
A passionate outdoor enthusiast and environmentalist, Roland has spent many years exploring the unique diversity of landscape only Hong Kong has to offer.
Facing personal challenges and looking for a new direction in life, he confronted his fear of heights by venturing into the world of vertical adventure and in doing so became an avid climber and canyoneer.
After seeing the benefits first hand of challenging oneself in an outdoor environment, Roland founded HKOutsider with a view to help others pursue their own personal development. Whether inspiring people to get fitter, build friendships across cultures or overcome personal boundaries, he has created a community based platform in the truest sense of the word.
Applying these skills and developing new partnerships in the outdoor community, he went on to discover new challenges off the beaten track, uncovering the true hidden beauty of Hong Kong. These multi-discipline adventures became the foundations of HKOutsider.
Through developing this community, Roland advocates for change in our own behavior.
Be conscious of others.
How to be a leader AND a team player.
Be aware of the Climate Crisis and our impact on the environment.
These core values balance life with self development whilst adopting a mindset of what you can do for others, an attitude that becomes ever more prevalent in the world we live in today.
These shared experiences in appreciation of what’s outside our own doors and walls are what HKOutsider is all about.
Originating from Northern California, Derek grew up in the endless wilderness of the American outdoors. Climbing, Camping, Whitewater Kayaking, and Alpine Mountaineering played a significant role in his upbringing. He has traveled extensively and lived the world over, all the while pursuing his passion for adventure. Arriving in Hong Kong this is where his outdoor endeavours turned into true lifestyle, exploring the coastline, country parks and trails of Hong Kong.
As a Technology Executive, Derek struggled to balance time between the desk, city life and the outdoors. This is where he feels the most alive, and his involvement with HKOutsider connects him to a community to share his passion and have the rewarding experience of helping people break through personal barriers and truly feel alive.
Considering his experience and skill base, Derek is well placed as one of our primary activity leaders and alongside Roland, is responsible for shaping the HKOutsider community.
Cindy is a local Hong Kong girl, although having spent some time being educated in Canada. Through her childhood she would refer to herself as a ‘bench kid’. Someone who never gets involved with physical activity. However in later years back in Hong Kong she discovered her passion for the outdoors through exploring its country parks and hiking trails. A chance encounter one night on the trails with Roland became the start of her HKOutsider journey.
Cindy is great at organising and is responsible for coordinating most HKOutsider activities as well as guiding, she is an invaluable part of our team and a big testament to what our community is all about. Initially she was quite hesitant to join our activities, fearing it would be too adventurous and challenging, but discovered much to the contrary. Surrounded by people sharing the same passion from varying fitness and experience levels who encouraged her to push boundaries and achieve new personal goals.
Tania is our community manager and is responsible for all things branding and IT, managing the systems we use for onboarding new members and arranging activities. Locally born and educated overseas, Tania comes from the start up business culture which brings a refreshing proactive drive into the leadership team which helps our community evolve.
Apart from being tech savvy, Tania is an avid Muay Thai and yoga enthusiast. Having spent most of her time training indoors, she has discovered the benefits of outdoor activities and an appreciation for the environment. Tania also enjoys the inclusive nature and genuine energy of the community together with how quickly real friendships are made.
Born and raised in Russia, Diana has lived abroad since the age of 18. After exploring Asia in recent years, she has now settled in Hong Kong and calls it home. Naturally active with her lifestyle, she finds that apart from an extensive indoor training routine, exploring the outdoors offers a more memorable experience in looking for a challenging path. Diana is gifted with natural technical skills and a strong motivator for people to challenge themselves. As a guide she is an inspiring role model for the younger members of the community.
Diana feels the authentic personalities who offer a positive attitude, care for others and a concern for the sustainability of our environment are what makes the HKOutsider community what it is. These values combined with the emotional support from the team elevate us to a position where no challenge is insurmountable.
Joel is our gentleman guide within the HKOutsider community. Originally from Australia, he has been based in Hong Kong for the last 7 Years. As a young and avid adventurer, Joel brings plenty of positive energy which he shares with those around him. Besides his love of the great outdoors, he joined the HKOutsider leadership team as a means of helping others.
Joel sees HKOutsider as a family and as a means of giving back to the community, encouraging participants to find happiness in exploring the beauty of Hong Kong's natural wilderness and assisting them in overcoming various challenges. He is known in the community for his caring attitude towards others and you will likely find him at the back of the pack making sure everyone is ok.
Gabe, a Southern Californian raised in the foothills of Los Ángeles is no stranger to the outdoors. From an early age hiking and climbing around his home town to traveling around the World tackling more complex trails and mountains. Gabe has gained extensive invaluable experience on his travels and needless to say is a welcome addition to the leadership team at HKOutsider.
After arriving in Hong Kong and working in the energetic F&B industry he quickly found himself struggling to find the right work life balance. Discovering our community and its varying activities which can be as short as a two hour night hike enabled him to find his outlet and passion for the outdoors once again. Gabe appreciates the camaraderie in the community with others from different walks of life and if you are lucky enough to find him guiding the group, he is quite the charming entertainer.
